ROME- Minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League Abdelkader Messahel and Italian Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs Vincenzo Amendola chaired Friday in Rome the 2nd session of bilateral strategic dialogue on political and security issues.
During this session, the two sides reviewed the important events on the bilateral agenda, particularly the holding of the Algerian-Italian Cooperation Follow-up Committee and the 3rd session of the bilateral strategic dialogue, scheduled in Rome and Algiers, respectively, before the end of 2016.
They also examined security and political regional issues of common interest, notably those relating to Libya, Sahel and the fight against terrorism and cross-border organized crime, as well as the migratory issue.
About the situation in Libya, the two sides underlined a convergence of views on the important progress made by the presidential Council of the Government of the National Accord , since its return to Tripoli as part of the final resolution of the crisis, by the implementation of a political process led by the United Nations.
Messahel and Amendola pointed out that an inclusive dialogue must be held as soon as possible and called to implement a national reconciliation policy able to preserve the sovereignty of Libya, its territorial integrity, unity and its people’s cohesion.
In this regard, they reiterated their support to the Government of the National Accord to meet the political, security and economic expectations and put an end to the sufferings of the Libyan people.
Concerning the fight against terrorism, the two sides expressed their concern about its global growing threat and its known junction with the transnational organized crime, insisting on the need for a joint and coordinated response of the international community to deal with these factors of instability and insecurity, notably in the Sahel.
The two sides also broached the issue of cyber-security.
In this regard, Messahel renewed the call of Algeria about the urgent need to implement an international charter under the aegis of the United Nations to put internet and social networks in the service of peace, tolerance, mutual understanding and rapprochement of peoples and civilizations.
Messahel highlighted the Algerian experience in terms of deradicalisation and announced the forthcoming holding, in Algiers on 7-8 September 2016, of the international conference on the role of democracy in the prevention of radicalisation and fight against terrorism.
Concerning the situation in Mali, Messahel and Amendola renewed their support to the complete implementation of Algiers Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in this country and expressed their concern about the resurgence of terrorist attacks targeting the United National Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).
