ALGIERS- Minister for Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League Abdelkader Messahel, on Sunday in Algiers advocated culture of peace and dialogue among civilizations.
“The beginning of a new era of rapprochement between our peoples (Mediterranean southern and northern shores) requires an adhesion and a renewed commitment to the culture of peace and dialogue between civilizations,” Messahel said on the occasion of the Day of Dialogue.
He said that “promoting a culture of dialogue, rapprochement between the North and the South and rejecting the culture of rancor and hatred represent highly civilizational actions, capable of honoring the nations that adopt these actions.”
However, “there are still challenges to be taken up, such as persistent racist practices and xenophobia which demonstrate the misunderstandings about the condition and dignity of persons.”
The Algerian people who lived through “much hostility and even external aggression throughout their history,” is able to “show the positive values of dialogue and tolerance towards themselves and towards others,” Messahel said
The Algerian people have “always drawn on those values to preserve internal cohesion and take up the challenges.”
The minister also said that the constitutional revision, initiated by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, has “consolidated the place of civil society in Algeria, which constitutes, besides the public authorities, one of the essential components which efficiency is more and more confirmed.”
