ALGIERS- Algeria urged Saturday the signatories of the peace agreement in Mali to promote “dialogue and consultation” and to “step up” efforts to “overcome the difficulties on the ground.”
“Algeria urges the officials of the movements signatories of the peace agreement to fully assume their responsibility and to quickly act to end these schemes, to promote the dialogue and consultation and to step up the efforts aimed at overcoming the difficulties on the ground,” said the spokesman of Foreign Affairs Ministry Abdelaziz Benali-Cherif in a statement to APS.
Benali-Cherif added that Algeria followed “carefully the latest armed confrontations” that caused deaths, Thursday, in Aguelhok, in the region of Kidal, in northern Mali, underlining that “these confrontations among elements belonging to armed groups signatories of the peace agreement in Mali, stemmed from the process of Algiers, constitute serious violations of the terms of this agreement and affect the spirit of understanding of the different Malian parties in its effective implementation.”
The spokesman pointed out that these “negative developments that benefit, first of all, the activities of terrorist groups and organized crime in the region, might undermine the credibility of the movements signatories of the peace agreement and their resolute commitment to the peace process.”
