PARIS (France)- French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Algeria, on Wednesday, was dubbed “important” by Paris, as it takes place before the meeting, in Paris, of the High level inter-governmental commission (CIHN).
It is president Macron’s second visit to Algeria in a year, following the one he made as a candidate for the French presidential elections last February, and in which he dubbed colonization “a crime against humanity.”
“It is a French-Algerian sequence that will take place this week,” said the Elysée on Monday, highlighting “the depth and intensity of relations between France and Algeria, called to be further developed,” underlining that France “wishes to accompany Algeria in its strategic vision of development.”
The French president, who will be accompanied by the minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian and Gerald Darmanin, as well as a number of elected representatives, artists, writers, and start-uppers, “will have to speak about cooperation, regional issues, and the memory issue,” according to the source, which added that Macron “wants to show support to several projects between the two countries with a renewed and shared vision on cooperation.”
The Elysée said that this visit “will later be followed by another State visit which will require preparation because of Algeria’s important place.”
Algeria “holds an important place, a bridge between the Mediterranean and Africa. It is a great neighbouring country with which we wish to strengthen our relations because of its unique place,” noting that President Macron “wanted to make this visit quickly to show the importance of this country.”
