APS : MONDAY 18 DECEMBER 2017
TUNIS-Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel on Sunday partook in the tripartite ministerial meeting (Algeria-Egypt-Tunisia) on Libya, which brought together Egyptian and Tunisian FMs,
Sameh Choukri and Khemaies Jhinaoui respectively.
The meeting, which follows the tripartite meetings held in Algiers in June and Cairo on November 2017, was an opportunity for the three foreign ministers to discuss the situation in Libya and the means the three countries can mobilize to support the UN-backed resolution efforts.
In this regard, the three FMs stressed that the Libyan Political Agreement (LPA) should in no way mean the abandonment of this legal basis, which remains the only framework for the search for a political solution to the Libyan crisis, especially since the United Nations Security Council reaffirmed the continuity of this Agreement. In this regard, they reiterated their support for the UN efforts and the Representative of the Secretary General Ghassane Salame to resolve the Libyan crisis.
As regards security aspects, the ministers emphasized the seriousness of the situation in the region following the return of foreign terrorist fighters and the spread of the terrorist threat and organized crime.
In the face of this situation, they emphasized the importance of maintaining consultation between Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt on the situation in Libya and a high level of vigilance with a view to addressing these challenges.
Following the meeting, the participants adopted a joint statement in which they emphasized the convergence of views between the three countries on support to the settlement of the crisis under the LPA. They also stressed the need for regular consultation between them.
