Lamamra stresses necessity of adhering to NAM principles

ALGIERS- Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad Ramtane Lamamra took part, by video conference, in the Mid-Term Ministerial Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), under the presidency of the Republic
of Azerbaijan, according to a ministerial statement released on Wednesday.

This two-day meeting (from 13 to 14 July) and which occurs in the context of the celebration, this year, of the 60th anniversary of the creation of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), is held under the theme “The Non-Aligned Movement at heart of multilateral efforts in responding global challenges.”

In his speech, Lamamra stressed “the necessity for all the member States of the Movement to reaffirm their commitment to the ideals and principles of the Movement.” He paid, on behalf of President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Algerian people, “a well-deserved tribute to all the founding fathers of the Movement, including the leaders of the Algerian National Liberation Movement and the provisional Government of the Algerian Republic.

Speaking about the global health crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as other transnational challenges, including the phenomenon of terrorism, organized crime, the armed conflicts and the climate changes, Lamamra called for “the promotion of the international cooperation and the strengthening of the multilateral system, in compliance with the objectives and principles of the United Nations Charter.”

In this regard, Lamamra confirmed that Algeria “will continue to promote the multilateralism values in all its efforts aimed to further political and peaceful solutions to the crises in its neighborhood and beyond, as well as in its several initiatives meant to boost the regional and continental economic integration.”

He also underlined “the ongoing support of NAM since its creation to the just decolonization causes worldwide, by emphasizing the necessity for NAM to maintain solidarity with the Palestinian and Sahrawi peoples.”

Concerning Palestine, Lamamra called on the Movement’s members to “support the international efforts aimed to deal with the deep causes of the conflict,” stressing the “necessity of ending the occupation and enabling the Palestinian people to create their independent State with al-Quds as capital.”

As regards Western Sahara, Lamamra said that “the resumption of the armed conflict between Morocco and the Polisario Front deserves a greater attention from the international community. He called on the United Nations Secretary General “to speed up the appointment of his personal envoy and launch a credible political process between the two sides to the conflict, in order to reach a fair and lasting political solution which guarantees the self-determination of the people of the Sahrawi Republic, founding member of the African Union.”
