ALGER-The Regional Rirector of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the Maghreb region Golda El Khoury highlighted Thursday in Algiers the global role
Algeria can play in the field of heritage.
In a statement to the press ahead of a meeting with Minister of Culture Azzedine Mihoubi under the celebration of the International Day of Living Together in Peace, the UN official said that “the meeting was an opportunity for both parties to review the Ministry’s projects, areas of cooperation between UNESCO and Algeria and the role of women in promoting culture and heritage.”
Referring to Couscous, El Khoury stated that “this intangible world heritage can bring together several countries, not only in the Maghreb but also in Europe, with a view to fostering greater cooperation between countries and people.”
For his part, Mihoubi called this meeting important and fruitful as both parties addressed several aspects likely to boost cooperation between Algeria, UNESCO and the countries of the Maghreb Regional Office, in view of the considerable contribution of this region to human civilization.
“We can carry out a set of specific projects in the fields of heritage, literature, women and many other societal aspects common to the Maghreb countries,” said the minister.
Joint listing applications have been submitted to UNESCO like the Couscous meal, which was the subject of a meeting a few days ago at the initiative of Algeria, in which partook the Maghreb countries and experts, recalled Mihoubi.
Mihoubi also referred to another application submitted to UNESCO for the first time by two countries from the Northern and Southern shores of the Mediterranean, namely Algeria and Spain, on the listing of fortresses such as the Fort of Oran and other Spanish sites, stressing that this cooperation is part of the “Coexistence and Living Together” approach between peoples in a single region.
