ALGIERS-The Algerian Cement Industry Group (GICA) exported more than 390,000 tonnes of clinker to African countries in the period between January and May 2019, the group told APS on Thursday.
Between last January and May, GICA exported 390,184.10 tonnes of clinker (semi-finished product) to Côte d’Ivoire, Mauritania and Senegal.
As for grey cement, the group exported, during the same period, 17,553.80 tonnes to Gambia.
According to forecasts, GICA exports for the 2019 financial year should reach 1.2 million tonnes (of clinker and cement grey).
In 2018, GICA exported 252,304.61 tonnes of clinker to Ghana, Mauritania, Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal, as well as 19,888.72 tonnes of grey cement to Gambia.
In May 2018, the group made its first clinker export operation (45,000 tonnes) from the port of Djen Djen (Jijel).
GICA has successfully penetrated markets in Africa from the West and is currently “prospecting to export clinker to other African and European countries.” The group is seizing the opportunity of the national cement industry growth that has enabled Algeria to move, in only a few years, from imports to exports.
Regarding the group’s production during the first half of 2019, the same source reported that GICA’s twelve cement plants had produced more than six (06) million tonnes of grey cement, recalling that production had exceeded 13.6 million tonnes in 2018, compared to 14 million tonnes in 2017.
However, the group expects production to exceed 20 million tonnes in 2020 following the inauguration of its new cement plants in Sigus (Oum El Bouaghi) and La Saoura (Bechar), with respective capacities of 2 million tonnes and 1 million tonnes.
