ALGIERS- Algerian athletes Noureddine Morceli, Ghanaian Charles Kumi Gyamfi and Ethiopian Derartu Tulu have been declared winners of the 10th “Pantheon of the African Sports Glory.”
The trophies, paying tribute to African sports icons, have been handed over at a ceremony held Friday evening in Algiers.
“I am happy and honoured to receive this distinction,” said former Algerian 1500m Olympic champion, Noureddine Morceli.
Passed away in 2 September 2015 (at 84 years old) in Accra, former international Ghanaian football player (1950-1961), and then coach of the “Black Stars” between 1963 and 1965, Charles Kumi Gyamfi, has been posthumously honoured.
The trophy was handed over to his son, who attended the ceremony.
Ethiopia’s marathon runner Derartu Tulu, who did not attend the ceremony, has been honoured for his whole carrier, including four Africa championships, a world championship and two Olympic titles.
She is considered as the first black African athlete to win an Olympic title.
In addition, an honorific title has been bestowed on President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, and distinctions were offered to the chairman of the Algerian Olympic Committee, Mustapha Berraf, Minister of Youth and Sports, El Hadi Ould-Ali, and the Wali (governor) of Algiers, Abdelkader Zoukh, for their contribution to the development of sports.
