Libya crisis: Messahel reiterates Algeria’s constant, unchanged position

ALGIERS- Algeria’s position regarding the Libyan crisis is “constant and remains unchanged,” Minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League Abdelkader Messahel told APS on Monday.
“it is based on the respect for the sovereignty of this country, its territorial integrity and unity as well as the cohesion of its people.”
Messahel reiterated Algeria’s “strong support to the United Nations efforts for a lasting solution to the crisis in Libya and to the proposals made by the UN envoy for Libya.”
These proposals on the rapid signing of a political agreement between the Libyan parties for the formation of a national unity government in charge of managing the transitional period and the various political security and economic challenges, as well as the fight against terrorism, especially Daesh and its connections with the organized crime through weapons and drugs trafficking.”
In this regard, the minister said that the outcomes of the 7th meeting of Foreign ministers of Libya’s neighbouring countries, held in Algiers on 1 December 2015, with the participation of the UN new envoy for Libya Martin Kobler.
The meeting culminated in the adoption of final statement, with a wide consensus on the need for a political solution to the Libyan crisis, the rapid signing of a political agreement between the Libyan parties and the urgent formation of a national unity government.
Messahel said that the meeting was an opportunity for the participating Foreign ministers to reiterate “the strong support to the UN process and the efforts of the UN envoy as the only means to resolve the conflict.”
