ALGIERS – Algeria is following with great concern the current events in the Republic of Chad and pays tribute to President Idris Déby Itno who died on Tuesday of injuries, a foreign ministry statement said.
“Algeria calls on all the children of Chad to show a great sense of responsibility and to favor dialogue, the only method that will enable them to handle the current circumstances and to preserve peace and stability in the country,” the statement added.
“Algeria reiterates its firm attachment to the cardinal principle of the African Union (AU) linked to the rejection of unconstitutional changes,” said the same statement.
Chadian President Idriss Déby Itno, in power for 30 years, died on Tuesday of wounds suffered on front line as country’s soldiers battle rebels in the north, the Army spokesman said in a statement read out on state television on Tuesday.
On April 11th, he was announced winner of the presidential election with 79.31% of the votes cast, in a tense context marked by a rebel incursion into Tibesti, in the north of the country.
