CAIRO – Algeria, by the voice of Minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and the Arab League Abdelkader Messahel, called for combining international counterterrorism
efforts as part of the UN
strategy and in compliance with the international law.
Algeria calls for “the combination of international efforts to fight terrorism within the framework of the UN strategy, around joint and shared objectives” and underlines “the need to comply with international law, to UN resolutions and lists of terrorist organizations established by the UN, which do not include the political components nationally and internationally recognized and present on the national socio-political scene,” said Messahel Thursday night in Cairo during the works of the 145th session of the Arab League Ministerial Council.
“Governments and parties are urged not to interfere in the internal affairs of countries in accordance with the Charters of the UN and the Arab League,” said Messahel.
“The Algerian approach in terms of counter-terrorism has proven that any struggle against this scourge must go beyond the security aspect and privilege dialogue and national reconciliation, through comprehensive alternatives and strategies for fighting any form of violent extremism and drying up ideological sources, “he added.
More explicitly, Messahel outlined the Algerian experience “initiated by President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, which has resulted in the policies of harmony and the national reconciliation backed by the Algerian people. Those policies bore fruits and helped extinguish the fire of fitna, restore peace and security throughout the country and exterminate terrorism that raged for a decade.”
These policies, added Messahel, “are now reflected in a series of global democratic reforms contained in the Constitution, amended on February 7th by the Algerian Parliament, for consolidating the democratic process, strengthening the foundations of the Rule of Law and the independence of the judiciary, expanding the powers of the constitutional Council, and strengthening the powers of the Council of the nation”.
