ALGIERS- Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres discussed on Monday in a meeting by videoconference several international questions, notably the situation in Western Sahara, Libya and Mali, said a communiqué from Foreign Ministry.
“With regard to Western Sahara, Boukadoum called for urgent action of the UN and stressed the need for responding to the Sahrawi people’s legitimate aspirations, in line with the UN responsibilities and the mandate of the MINURSO,” said the communiqué.
Foreign Minister also called for “a personal envoy of the UN Secretary General for Western Sahara to be rapidly appointed.”
Regarding the situation in Libya, Boukadoum and Guetteres “welcomed the signing, in Geneva, on October 24th, 2020, of an agreement of final ceasefire between the National Alliance Government and the Libyan National Army (LNA).”
The UN Secretary General thanked Algeria for its active role and its full commitment to contribute to the final settlement of this crisis and called for Algeria’s continued action in favor of Libya.
Boukadoum and Guterres also reviewed the recent political developments in Mali, where a convergence of views between Algeria and the UN has been registered, concerning the political situation in that country.
Guterres then also wished to strongly thank Algeria for its unwavering commitment to peace in Mali and its relentless efforts which it carries out under the Algiers Accord.
For the UN Secretary General, the accord remains fully relevant and constitutes a credible reference for the reconstruction of peace in Mali.
The UN Secretary-General and the Foreign Minister have agreed to continue dialogue in favor of the resolution of the conflicts within the framework of multilateralism.
