Belani receives EU Special Representative for Middle East Peace Process

ALGIERS- Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad Amar Belani received Monday, in Algiers, the European Union Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process Sven Koopmans,
the ministry said in a statement.

During these talks, Koopmans welcomed Algeria’s efforts which resulted on 13 October in the inking of the “Declaration of Algiers” on the inter-Palestinian reconciliation, stressing the importance of reaffirming 2002’s Arab Peace Initiative as a basis for a fair and lasting settlement of the conflict” in the Middle East, said the source.

For his part, Belani reiterated “the central character” of the Palestinian cause which will be reaffirmed in the next Summit of the Arab League, to be held in Algiers on 1-2 November, while highlighting Algeria’s efforts for reconciliation and support to the Palestinian people.

He also “welcomed the convergence of views with the European Union on this issue, notably its action for the creation of a Palestinian State, in compliance with the United Nations’ relevant resolutions,” according to the source.

Amar Belani stressed the “necessity of combining all good will to strengthen the Palestinian unity and implement the Declaration of Algiers, in order to build a viable Palestinian State with al-Quds as a capital,” concluded the statement.
