ALGIERS- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon voiced “sincere” thanks to President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika for the “leadership” role that Algeria plays in the combat against climate change.
“I want to express to you and your government, my sincere thanks for the leadership role that you play in the fight against climate change. It is thanks to you in particular that the 21st Session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change resulted in the adoption of the Paris Agreement on December 12, 2015,” Ban wrote in his message to the Head of State.
For the UN Chief, the adoption of this agreement “came as close of a remarkable year, marked by numerous developments due to multilateral efforts that will benefit the planet and all mankind.”
The agreement laid a solid foundation for “climate change resilient global economy”, thus creating the conditions “conducive to a future which is more secure, healthier and more prosperous for all,” he added.
In this regard, Ban invited President Bouteflika to participate in the High Level ceremony during which Paris Agreement will open to signing at the UN headquarters on 22 April 2016.
“By signing this agreement with other world leaders, you will formalize the commitment of the international community to address issues related to climate change,” Ban stressed, adding that “this will accelerate the entry into force of the Paris Agreement, and facilitate the defining of operational modalities.”
He urged President Bouteflika “to continue to play a leading role and adopt the necessary political guidance during this critical phase,” stressing the need to accelerate adoption of “concrete and ambitious measures likely to open the way for the implementation of the Paris Agreement.”
