AU Summit: Algeria to present report on fight against terrorism, violent extremism in Africa

ADDIS ABABA- Algeria will present a report on the prevention and fight against terrorism and violent extremism in Africa at the 30th African Union Summit, to be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia,
on 28 and 29 January, said Thursday Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel.
“Algeria will present the report as part of the mandate entrusted to President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, as AU’s coordinator for the prevention and fight against terrorism and violent extremism in Africa,” Messahel told the press in Addis Ababa.
The presentation of this report is high on the agenda of the 30th AU Summit.
The Head of State was designated by his African counterparts for this mission in recognition for his personal commitment to the fight against international terrorism, as well as for Algeria’s significant and effective contribution to the international mobilization in the fight against the scourge.
In this regard, the AU Peace and Security Council will hold, ahead of the Summit, an ordinary meeting, chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.
The meeting will focus mainly on the African strategy for the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
The AU summit will be also preceded by the meeting of the Committee of Ten, which will examine the report on the AU Peace and Security Council in conflict resolution in Africa as well as on the reforms of the United Nations Security Council.
In addition to a meeting of the High-Level Committee on Libya, chaired by Congo’s President Denis Sassou-Nguesso, and a meeting of the ministerial Follow-up Committee on the implementation of AU’s Agenda 2063.
This year’s Summit will be held under the theme “Winning the Fight against Corruption: A Sustainable Path to Africa’s Transformation.”
In this regard, Messahel said that Africa should build capacities to ensure its sustainable development while fighting against corruption.
