AIN TEMOUCHENT-Algeria has major strengths in aquaculture that allow it to enter the Mediterranean market and contribute to the diversification of the national economy
through increasing its fish exports, say experts of the Support Programme to Economy Diversification “DIVECO 2.”
Head of the “DIVECO2” mission of experts Antonio Almunoz told APS on the sidelines of a regional workshop on the development plan of aquaculture that “Algeria has the necessary strengths allowing it to be a key player in fish production in the Mediterranean and develop its exports to the northern shore of the Mediterranean.”
The €15 million “DIVECO 2” programme, which was launched on September 2015 and will run until 2018 as part of a partnership between Algeria and the European Union (EU), supports a strategy to increase the diversification rate of the country’s economy through sustainable development and the improvement of the fishing sector’s output, stressed the expert.
Aldana recalled that the global fishing market had grown by 7% per year and the consumption rate had increased from 9kg to 19kg per year per person.
“The Mediterranean region is a promising market and Algeria must have a strategic position because it has all the strengths to promote aquaculture,” he affirmed.
The expert expected Algeria’s marine aquaculture production to hit 30,000 tonnes per year by 2020 thanks to the new vision adopted to develop this field, stressing that the “DIVECO 2″ programme is one the factors favouring aquaculture development.”
