ALGIERS- Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum and the vice president of Switzerland and head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), Ignazio Cassis, agreed Sunday on stepping up bilateral cooperation in various fields, stressing that “there is an understanding between the two sides to peacefully settle the crises both at regional and international levels.”
“We have just finished our working meeting in which we address some quite important and constructive topics. We discussed relations in the political, scientific, economic, technical and cultural fields,” Boukadoum said following a working meeting with his Swiss counterpart, extended to delegations from both countries.
“Both sides noted with satisfaction the quality of relations between the two countries.”
“Beyond bilateral ties, we have tackled several issues of common regional and international, such as the issues of Western Sahara, Libya and the Sahel region,” the chief of Algerian diplomacy said.
He added that “the two sides agreed on coordinating in the different areas in favour of the peaceful settlement of crises.”
The head of Switzerland’s Federal Department of Foreign Affairs stressed the potential of economic cooperation between Algeria and Switzerland.
There is a “real potential of exchange and cooperation between the two countries in various economic, technical and scientific areas.”
He added that the two sides discussed “economic exchanges, migration, violent extremism and its prevention.”
Cassis stressed the historical past between Algeria and Switzerland dating back to the war of independence of Algeria.
He recalled Switzerland’s efforts to facilitate the Evian Agreements between the Algerian revolutionists and the representatives of colonial France during the war of independence (1954-1962).
