BLIDA (Algeria)- Algeria intends to export electric energy to “neighboring countries once it becomes self-sufficient,” the minister of Energy, Mustapha Guitouni, said Sunday.
“At a first stage, we plan to export electric power in the coming years to Libya (3000 Mgwt) and Tunisia (300 Mgwt),” Guitouni said while inspecting a number of projects in Blida (50-km west of Algiers).
The minister said projects relating to the building and strengthening of the electric energy transport system, for exportation to the two countries, are under way.
The decision has been taken after the national coverage of electricity has reached 99% in 2018, from 30% in 2000, the minister added.
Guitouni stressed President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s insistence, since he came to power, to connect the whole country, including the Deep South, to electric power and natural gas to improve the living conditions of people.
The minister said electric energy production capacity has increased to 18,000 Mgwt in 2018, from 5000 Mgwt in 2000, after a number of strategic projects have come into operation.
