JOHANNESBURG- Algerian Hassina Mouri, Professor of Geology at the University of Johannesburg, has been elected Vice-President of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) for the period 2020-2024, becoming the first African woman to hold this position.
Mouri, a South African citizen, was recently appointed as a member of the Board of the International Geoscience Programme of UNESCO.
She is also a member of the Advisory Board of the South African Journal of Science (SAJS), a prestigious academic scientific journal in South Africa.
The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), founded in 1961, is recognized as one of the largest scientific organizations in the world. Its aims to encourage international cooperation and participation in earth sciences related to human well-being.
