NEW YORK- The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed Wednesday Algerian Leila Zerrougui as Special Representative and head of the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the DR Congo
(MONUSCO), said Guterres’s spokesman Stephane Dujarric.
Zerrougui succeeds Maman Sambo Sidikou of Niger, who will complete his assignment in January 2018, said Dujarric.
Zerrougui brings more than 30 years of experience in the field of rule of law and protection of civilians and demonstrated her skills in management and leadership.
Zerrougui served as Special Representative of UN Secretary General for Children and Armed Conflicts from 2012 to 2016 and Deputy Special Representative of UN Secretary General in MONUSCO from 2008 to 2012.
Born in 1956, Zerrougui graduated from the Ecole National d’Administration in Algiers in 1980. Since 1993, she has held various academic positions at law schools in Algeria.
