ALGIERS –Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel on Wednesday welcomed the “ambitious” initiative of the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres to initiate a dialogue between the United Nations
system for Development and the member states in a view to “effectively” implementing Agenda 2030.
“This initiative will undoubtedly reposition the United Nations system at the core of its universal mission of strengthening multilateralism for the well-being of all,” he told a meeting held on the occasion of the celebration of the UN Day.
Algerian top diplomat said he was hoping that the Guterres initiative “will reach results that meet the expectations of the international community and especially those of the populations in the developing countries,” adding that “the international security, political stability and development are today intimately linked.”
“The consolidation of international cooperation in order to achieve develop and improve the well-being of peoples has always been one of the Organization’s priorities,” said Messahel.
Over the years “UN member states have also recognized that sustainable development is the main vehicle for achieving this noble goal.”
The international community has committed for three years to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted in September 2015, in New York
According to the Foreign Minister, this programme, which builds on the progress made in the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals (2000-2015), is structured around a series of “interconnected” objectives.
Reaching these goals requires an international “resolutely action-oriented approach,” insisted Messahel.
He said Algeria boasts of “achieving almost all the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) before deadline” and of taking “major steps forward” in many others, mentioning the fields of poverty eradication, education, infant mortality, the promotion of gender equality, youth, women’s empowerment and the sustainable environment “all integrated into national development plans since 2000”.
