Algeria, US hold new round of talks on TIFA agreement
APS : Tuesday, 02 October 2018
WASHINGTON-Algeria and the United States held the 6th round of talks Tuesday in Washington on the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA).
The agenda of the meeting includes many trade-related matters, access to markets, the protection of intellectual property rights and business environment.
The meeting will focus on a roadmap on trade and investment which will involve five key sectors, namely industry, energy, agriculture, trade and tourism.
Talks will be led by an Algerian multisectoral delegation chaired by Cherif Omari, Secretary General at the Trade Ministry, and officials of the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), which is the executive body of the U.S. federal government responsible for trade policy at the bilateral and multilateral levels.
Inked in 2001 by the two countries, the TIFA agreement aims to establish an annual economic dialogue and enhance business and trade between both countries’ companies.
In 2016, Algeria has become once again eligible for the US Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), a mechanism facilitating access of beneficiary countries’ products to the US market free of customs duties.
This preferential regime, from which Algeria benefited for the first time in 2004, includes manufactured products, semi-finished products and certain agricultural, fisheries and craft products.
However, very few Algerian products have marketed in the US under this advantageous tariff system.
