ALGIERS-Russia’s Foreign Minister Serguei Lavrov affirmed Tuesday the determination of Algeria and Russia to strengthen their cooperation through the signing of “a new document” that will serve as a basis
for bilateral relations.
“Algeria and Russia are bound by sincere and friendly relations,” Lavrov told the press after the audience granted to him by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic.
The two countries will celebrate together the 60th Anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations coinciding with the 60th Anniversary of Algeria’s independence.
The Declaration on Strategic Cooperation, signed between the two countries in 2001, is “the foundation of bilateral relations. Today, we have reaffirmed the importance of joint action to tighten bilateral cooperation through the signing of a new document that will serve as a basis for these relations,” he said.
“With a view to developing political, trade, economic, military, artistic, cultural, and humanitarian cooperation, we have transmitted to President Tebboune the invitation of his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to visit Moscow.
After expressing his country’s “satisfaction” with the development of bilateral relations, Lavrov said that “the volume of trade between the two countries has reached USD$3 billion last year.”
“There are opportunities to achieve broader prospects,” he said.
Lavrov also highlighted “the interest of Russian companies in developing their relations with Algerian partners in several areas including energy, mining, exploration, and pharmaceutical industry.”
All cooperation-related issues “will be discussed at the next meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Commercial, Business, Technical and Scientific cooperation scheduled shortly in Algiers.”
