ALGIERS – Algeria has officially contacted the General Secretary of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) to convene “within shortened deadlines” a meeting of the Union’s Foreign Affairs Ministers Council,
the Foreign Ministry said Thursday in a communiqué.
“Algeria has officially contacted the General Secretary of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) requesting from him to organize within shortened deadlines a meeting of the AMU foreign ministers council,” added the communiqué.
The “Union’s member countries foreign ministers have been informed of the request,” said the source.
This initiative “falls within Algeria’s deep and repeated confidence that the revival of AMU building and the reactivation of its bodies are essential,” added the Foreign Ministry.
Moreover, it comes as an “extension of the last extraordinary summit of the African Union on 17-18 November 2018, on the AU institutional reforms, which has given particular interest to the role of the regional economic communities in the integration process of the African countries.”
The “revival of the Ministers Council meetings, at the initiative of Algeria, is likely to reinvigorate the activities of the other bodies of the Arab Maghreb Union,” concluded communiqué.
