ALGIERS- Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab said Monday in Algiers that Algeria relies on the development of the mining sector to boost its economy, based mainly on the oil and gas industry,
said the ministry in a statement.
Speaking at the International Summit of Ministers of Mines (SIMM) of the year 2021, held by video conference and organized by the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC),
Arkab reported the launch of the action plan 2020-2024 to enable the mining sector, whose contribution remains “modest despite the great potential” to contribute more to the development of the national economy and create jobs, especially in landlocked areas, while taking into account aspects of environmental protection. and the creation of jobs, especially in remote areas, while taking into account the aspects of environmental protection.
The action plan, adds the same source, provides for the meeting of all conditions to ensure the attractiveness of the sector and the encouragement of investment through the revision of the
legislative and organizational framework governing the mining and the provision of accurate information to investors on geological maps and the inventory of minerals, to promote mineral exploration.
It is also the intensification of efforts in mining research through the active participation of private investors, national and foreign, the promotion of small and medium-sized mining companies and
the development of major industrial projects aimed at the development of local mining resources such as phosphate projects and the development of iron deposit Gara Djebilet to ensure the supply and development of the national metallurgical industry.
The plan also ensures the development of partnership to drain more capital, acquire technologies and techniques for research and processing of mineral materials and develop human resources by meeting the needs of training and specialization.
The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the achievement of these objectives aimed at the development of mining in Algeria where it has recorded a slowdown in the execution of the measures decided in 2020.

Nevertheless, Algeria has been able to adapt to the difficulties generated by the pandemic through strict measures taken by the Algerian government from the beginning of the crisis (closure of borders reduction to 50% of the workforce …), said the Minister.
