CAIRO-Minister of Maghreb Affairs, the African Union and the Arab League Abdelkader Messahel said Algeria pursued its effort to find a solution to the crisis in Libya,
highlighting Algeria’s experience in national reconciliation.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 147th session of the Council of the Foreign Ministers of the Arab League, Messahel stressed “he was convinced peoples are able to surmount resentment to achieve peace and stability in their countries,” stating Algeria “seeks with neighbouring states to bridge Libyan parties’ views and encourage inclusive dialogue under the UN backed resolution process far from foreign interference.”
The minister recalled Algeria “will host in next April the 11th meeting of Libya’s neighbouring countries to try to find a political solution to the crisis through inclusive dialogue and national reconciliation.”
UN must assume its responsibilities in the implementation of the relevant resolution of the Council of Security, particularly the resolution N°2259, to preserve Libya’s unity, sovereignty and stability and the cohesion of its people, he said.
Besides, Messahel advocated “deep and comprehensive” reform of the Arab League to address shortcomings and adapt to the changes and requirements resulting from such reform.
“The deep crisis witnessed by the Arab region prove the Arab League is unable to settle conflicts and manage unprecedented crisis in the region, which is threatened by foreign interference,” affirmed Messahel.
This situation “has negatively impacted the performance of the Arab League, which resulted in a decrease of its role and influence in international forums and decision-making circles.
