ALGIERS- Algeria intends to start negotiations with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in order to conclude a preferential trade agreement between the two sides, said Wednesday, in Algiers,
Trade Minister Said Djellab.
“We will negotiate a preferential trade agreement with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) that will facilitate the access of the Algerian products to this area which represents a market of 300 million consumers,” said Djellab in the opening ceremony of the 27thAlgerian Production Fair.
For Djellab, Algeria has effectively started negotiations on the preferential trade agreement with Mauritania which hosted last October the Algerian Production Fair, proving that “the national products have a place in foreign markets.”
Algeria will target then markets of the countries of central and southern Africa, added the minister.
It reflects, according to him, “the country’s strategic orientation towards its continent which represents a natural space.”
Adding “Algeria is a pioneering country in Africa and we must include an economic content in our diplomatic and political relation, an objective that we seek to achieve.”
In this regard, he noted that the economic studies show that Algeria will be, in the next few years, the most important promising market in the world, the volume of trading doesn’t exceed 11%.
This new orientation towards Africa will be achieved by several fairs and economic events in which Algeria will participate in this continent, said the minister, adding that Algeria will participate in 29 fairs in Africa during the period 2019/2020.
