ALGIERS-The programme to support economic diversification for the development of fisheries and aquaculture activities (DIVECO 2), launched part of a partnership between Algeria and the European Union (EU),
has wrapped up on Sunday and has achieved several goals, announced representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, the EU and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Financed by the EU (€15 million), this programme, launched in October 2015, aims to strengthen the role of the fisheries and aquaculture sector in the country’s economic diversification, stressed Agriculture Minister Cherif Omari.
The programme implementation resulted in the achievement of three main goals,” he explained in a speech read on his behalf by Zouggar Saida at the closing ceremony of the DIVECO 2 programme.
The achieved goals consist in “strengthening management and supervisory capacities to contribute to the consolidation of a relevant and viable strategy, the promotion and enhancement of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors and the enhancement of the capacities of professional organizations,” said the minister.
Omari stressed that the programme’s results should serve as “a reference for their extrapolation to other projects through the use of the experiences acquired and the consolidation of good relations with the EU.”
Ambassador and Head of the EU Delegation to Algeria, John O’Rourke, said “the DIVECO 2 programme has succeeded in contributing to the development of the fisheries and aquaculture sector.”
“The programme focused on the improvement of the sectoral strategy and management and supervisory capacities, training of managers, particularly in health management and fisheries statistics, which are very important,” explained O’Rourke in a speech he delivered on this occasion.
According to him, this programme has also contributed to the promotion and enhancement of the fishing and aquaculture sectors.
