ALGIERS- The member of the People’s National Assembly (lower house of Parliament) Djamel Bouras stressed Wednesday in New York the importance of promoting the values of democracy, development and human rights to reach a “social compact reflecting the political culture of society,” the lower house said in a statement.
Bouras, representing the speaker of the People’s National Assembly (lower house of Parliament), Mohamed Larbi Ould Khelifa, at the fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, said in an address that “those values involve men and women in the sustainable human development process and ensure a balance between national security needs and citizens’ aspiration to security “.
Algeria, which has recovered its sovereignty after 132 years of colonization and won over terrorism, “has adopted, since the arrival of President Bouteflika to power, a strategy allowing the country to restore security and stability and to be safe from the destructive upheaval shaking the region,” he stressed.
“Algeria’s constructive strategy, based on the values of concord, peace and national reconciliation, has contributed to the fight against extremism and terrorism, and to setting free the driving forces of society.”
“The reform process launched by Algeria also includes the promulgation of laws to boost democracy, promote pluralism and involve civil society in the making of general policies,” Bouras added.
