Algeria creates exclusive economic zone off its coasts
APS : Sunday, 01 April 2018
ALGIERS- Algeria just created an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) off its coasts, according to a presidential decree released at the Official Journal n° 18.
According to the decree, Algeria exercises its sovereign rights and jurisdiction over this EEZ, under the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982, notably the Chapter V.
The outer limits of the Algerian exclusive economic zone, calculated from baselines defined by August 1984 decree are determined according to the data provided by the World Geodetic System (WGS 84), said the decree.
However, the EEZ outer limits can be modified as part of bilateral agreements with States which coasts are adjacent to the Algerian ones, in accordance with the article 74 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The exclusive economic zone is an area where a coastal state exercises its sovereign rights in terms of resources exploration and exploitation.
It extends 200 nautical miles (370kms) from the State shores. Beyond, start the international waters.
