ALGIERS- The African Mechanism for Police Cooperation (AFRIPOL) will be an “added value” to the new global security architecture,
said Wednesday in Algiers Police Chief, Major General Abdelghani Hamel.
“The tragic events that occur every day around the world, sparing no continent, show that the threat is global and widespread, leaving perplexed the most efficient and better organized police services,” said Hamel in his opening address at a consultation meeting on AFRIPOL Launch.
The Police Chief underlined that the major challenges resulting from the new forms of terrorism, radicalization, foreign terrorist fighters, cybercrime, illicit trafficking in drugs and weapons, in addition to the migration and humanitarian crises and other criminal scourges “constitute threat factors to national, regional and international peace and security.”
“This situation requires joint and integrated response through genuine cooperation to address the common challenges,” he said.
In this regard, he added that “AFRIPOL will constitute an added value to the new global security architecture.”
Major General Hamel said that the 23rd African Regional Conference, held in Brazzaville (Congo) in February, “allowed identifying the needs in the continent an means to achieve our security objectives.”
AFRIPOL will have to establish cooperation between similar inter-governmental and international organizations with a view to “strengthening its capacities in fulfilling its missions in the best possible conditions.”
The Police chief concluded his address by paying tribute to President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika for his support to AFRIPOL and his substantial contribution to peace efforts and resolution of conflicts, which show “Algeria’s commitment to participate actively in the emergence of a comprehensive African peace and security architecture.”
Consultation meeting on AFRIPOL’s starting up in Algiers
ALGIERS- A consultation meeting on the starting up of the African Mechanism of Police Cooperation (AFRIPOL) is being held Wednesday, in Algiers, with the participation of experts of the African Union (AU) and African senior police officials, including Director General of National Police (DGSN) Major General Abdelghani Hamel.
Speaking at the opening of this meeting, Major General Abdelghani Hamel welcomed the attendance to this meeting of representatives of regional police organizations and sub-regional chiefs of police organizations, who “confirm their interest and commitment to the implementation of effective global police architecture against the threats related to terrorism and transnational organized crime.”
“I am convinced that this representativeness will allow us, during this meeting, to benefit from the experience of regional police organizations able to positively achieve our objective aimed at setting up an African police organization in accordance with the common principles of the universally accepted governance,” he said.
For his part, representative of the African Union Commission Tarek Ahmed Sharif expressed the gratitude and appreciation of his organization to Algeria for its efforts in favour of the setting up of AFRIPOL.
