137th IPU: Algeria tops African geopolitical group, joins permanent human rights commission

ALGIERS- Algeria was elected as head of African geopolitical group and member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)’s permanent human rights commission at the 137th assembly held in Saint Petersburg, Russia,
the Council of the Nation (upper house of Parliament) said Wednesday in a statement.
The works of the 137th IPU assembly attended by the Algerian MPs through a delegation representing both houses of Parliament, led by the speaker of the Council of the Nation, wrapped by “the election of (Algerian) Lower House member Chihab Seddik as chairman of the African geopolitical group and deputy Mohamed Djellab as a Permanent Human Rights Commission member.”
Bensalah, on Sunday, took part in the assembly’s general debate which discussed the “promotion of cultural pluralism and peace through interreligious and interethnic dialogue.”
In an address, Bensalah stressed the role of dialogue in the rejection of intolerance, extremism and violence.
He also underlined the need to boost peaceful coexistence among peoples, as the world is shaken by conflicts and security troubles, marked by “the rejection of the other and the instrumental use of religion and race,” the root causes of hatred and confrontation.”
