ALGIERS- African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security Smail Chergui underlined Wednesday, in Algiers, the necessity to coordinate efforts between all the African partners to counter terrorism which remains a “major source of concern” to the African continent plagued by the “increase in terrorist acts.”
“Terrorism and violent extremism remain major sources of concern to the African Union which is convinced that countering these phenomena must underlie the efforts aimed at putting an end to the factors favouring their spread,” said Chergui in his speech at the opening of the 9th annual meeting of the Focal Points of the African center for the Study and Research on Terrorism (ACSRT).
This meeting, “which occurs in a situation marked by the increase in terrorist acts in Africa,” is an “important forum” to exchange experiences and strengthen coordination in the fight against terrorism,” added the Algerian diplomat.
The African Commission and ACSRT continue to support the member States in their efforts to prevent the terrorist groups from recruiting new elements and obtaining funds to execute their attacks, underlined Chergui.
With the emergence of terrorist group “Daesh,” “the fragile security situation in the continent has worsened to such an extent that it represents today the main challenge,” he underlined.
Despite the international efforts aimed at weakening “Daesh” in Iraq and Syria, “fears remain on the movement of some terrorist elements to Africa and other regions of the world,” said Chergui.
At the moment where the international community continues its efforts to counter terrorism, “It is up to us to strengthen the African efforts to freeze these groups’ activities in our continent,” insisted Chergui.
