ALGIERS-US President is “very serious” about cooperating with Algeria on common goals, said Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Joey Hood, calling his talks with Algerian officials
“President Biden is very serious about working with Algeria on our common goals with respect to Libya, for example, as both countries seek the departure of foreign forces and the return of sovereignty to the Libyan people so that (Libyans) can decide their own future,” said Joey Hood in an interview with APS at the end of his visit to Algeria.
In view of the “role of Algeria in the Sahel and other regions,” Washington wants to strengthen its cooperation with Algiers and seeks to “preserve the Algerian rich cultural heritage,” he said.
The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State also called his discussions with Algerian officials “very productive.”
“I am very happy to be here. I was warmly welcomed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad Ramtane Lamamra as well as the Minister of Trade Kamel Rezig, the Prime Minister Aïmene Benabderrahmane and the Minister of Culture and Arts Wafaa Chaalal with whom we had very productive discussions on bilateral relations and cooperation on regional issues,” he said.
As for the Covid-19, the U.S. diplomat said that the fight against this pandemic is “Biden administration’s top priority.”
“We do so as the largest donors of vaccines to COVAX, which provides doses of vaccine to hundreds of millions of people around the world, including, hopefully, Algeria,” he said.
“The prospects for promoting political and peaceful solutions to the various crises undermining peace and security in the regions of North Africa and the Middle East were at the center of the meeting of the head of Algerian diplomacy, Ramtane Lamamra with the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
