NEW YORK- Algerian Islamologist and former minister of Higher Education, Mustapha Cherif, said Monday in New York that Algeria, a “vanguardist in terms of peace and dialogue among civilizations,
” attaches a paramount importance to the culture of peace for the prevention and settlement of conflicts.
In an address at the Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), being held in New York, the Algerian thinker said “Algeria, through its key geostrategic position, crossroads of civilizations, and its history, from the epic of Emir Abdelkader to the message of November and the policy of National Reconciliation, is at the forefront of peace and the alliance of civilizations, for the universal common good.”
Professor Mustapha Cherif, who made the address at the eighth edition of the global forum as an expert, put forward “the great importance Algeria attaches to the culture of peace, dialogue of civilizations and the living together, for the prevention and settlement of conflicts, building of inclusive societies and the establishment of fairer and more supportive world order.”
“Algeria’s recent initiative under the aegis of the United Nations, which led to the establishment of the International Day of Living Together in Peace, is a practical illustration,” Mustapha Cherif said.
The UNAOC, created in 2005 at the initiative of former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, works for a more peaceful and socially more inclusive world, distinguished by mutual respect among people of various cultural and religious identities.
