ALGIERS- The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Algeria Eric Overvest welcomed Wednesday “the decisive role” of the Algerian diplomacy in establishing peace and stability at the regional and international levels,
underlining Algeria’s commitment to UN’s founding values and its “full involvement” in the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In a statement to APS, on the sidelines of the celebration ceremony of the United Nations Day, organized at the headquarters of Foreign Affairs Ministry, Eric Overvest broached the mediation led by the Algerian diplomacy in the resolution of conflicts in the region, citing notably its “decisive” role in the conclusion of the peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eretria in Algiers in 1999 and the peace and reconciliation agreement in Mali in 2015.
“Algeria remains an important member within the United Nations. It was elected three times as non-permanent member of the Security Council while there are still countries which have never been chosen for this mission,” he said, pointing out that “Algeria also chaired the UN General Assembly in 1974.”
“The Algerian diplomacy is very strong and well known. Algeria has always defended the solidarity and development of the African countries,” he stressed.
Overvest also stressed the importance of celebrating the United Nations Day in Algeria, “a very important day to reaffirm our commitment to the UN values of tolerance, living-together in peace and sustainable development.”
“We are celebrating this day to promote the work we are conducting here in Algeria through the 14 agencies and programmes which are present here in four fields, namely economic diversification, social development, good governance and environment,” he said.
In this regard, he expressed his “satisfaction” at Algeria’s efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), notably through the implementation of an inter-ministerial committee to follow-up this programme.
“We signed last June a cooperation project to support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, involving the United Nations and governmental sectors, where coordination is ensured by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” he said.
