ALGIERS- Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdelkader Messahel signed, Wednesday in New York, the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, during an official ceremony organized by the UN Secretary General,
in presence of heads of State and government and foreign ministers of the UN member states, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.
“Algeria has, once again, reaffirmed its commitment to make of nuclear disarmament a top priority on the international agenda, for a safer world for all, and to establish peace and security in a weapon-free world. It also reaffirmed its commitment to the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (Pelindaba Treaty), and to the creation of a mass-destruction-weapon-free zone in the Middle East, in accordance with related international resolutions,” said the statement.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled that Algeria has participated in the negotiations and adoption of the new treaty, which constitutes a major achievement in the history of international efforts for nuclear disarmament, since the first extraordinary session of the UN General Assembly in 1978, devoted to disarmament.
The Treaty aims at strengthening the current international nuclear disarmament regime by the establishment, for the first time, of new international legally binding instrument standard banning nuclear weapons, and aims, in the second phase, at completely eliminating them.
