ALGIERS- The new UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Libya, head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Ghassan Salame, will make a working visit to Algeria from Saturday, as part of the “consultations and regular contacts” between Algeria and UNSMIL, the ministry of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday in a statement.
During the two-day visit, Salame will hold discussions with Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel and other Algerian senior officials, the statement said.
The discussions will “mainly focus on the situation in Libya in the lights of the latest developments in this country and the efforts made for the implementation of the political solution, initiated by the United Nations, to preserve the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity.”
The agenda of discussions includes “the need for the UN to regain its key role in conducting talks among the Libyan parties.”
“The next meetings at both international and regional levels for a lasting settlement of the crisis in this brother and friendly country, as well as restoring peace, security and stability,” will also be on the agenda,” according to the statement.
