DOHA-Trade Minister, Said Djellab on Tuesday said that Algeria’s participation as a guest of honour in the Qatar “Food & Hospitality” Show gave an overview of the country “as a promising destination for investments.”
This event gave an overview of economic diversity in Algeria, particularly agri-food diversity, which is the result of 20 years of work and effort. Algeria’s strong participation in this show will eventually culminate in Algerian-Qatari partnerships in the fields of exports and investment,” Djellab said at a press conference on the sidelines of the Doha Show.
“We are participating in this show with 31 major Algerian companies specializing in agri-food production, and we are working to develop trade with Qatar,” stated Djellab.
The show is a venue to promote Algerian production as well as the investment opportunities offered by the Algerian market, notably in the industrial sector. This meeting is also an opportunity for Algerian economic operators to give their Qatari counterparts an overview of the quality of Algerian products.
The development of Algerian-Qatari trade and investment relations can further enhance strong diplomatic and political ties.
In response to a question about trade between the two countries, the minister called the trade value more or less low (USD$6 billion), stressing that his sector “intends to broaden the scope of Algerian exports to Qatar.
In this regard, Djellab referred to the new strategy adopted by Algeria, in accordance with the instructions of President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, which aims to enhance Algerian exports and support cooperation with neighbouring and sister countries.
Algeria will continue to participate in international economic events because they represent an opportunity to enter many foreign markets, such as Belgium, the United States, Mauritania and Qatar.
Regarding the number of Algerian companies on the Qatari market, the minister assured that “their number will gradually increase” even if his sector would prefer “to deal with large distribution companies in Qatar in order to encourage them to come into contact with Algerian producers.”
