ALGIERS- President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune said that Algeria will not renounce the Association Agreement with the European Union (EU). It will rather revise the timetable relating to the tariff dismantling timeframe
in line with its economic interests.
The Head of the State has given an interview to national media officials, which was broadcast on Sunday.
“We cannot renounce the Association Agreement with the EU which is an important partner for us.”
The President again stressed Algeria attachment to its economic interests and its efforts to building resource generating economy.
Referring to the genuine rate of the compliance with EU agreement, President Tebboune said that the Agreement is not based on tariff dismantling only.
“We and the EU plan to revise the dismantling timeframe. The revision is being prepared by economists,” he said.
“We are partners of the EU. This partnership cannot be detrimental to our economy,” the President added.
In 2002, Algeria and the EU had signed an Association Agreement. In force since 2005, the Agreement provides for the establishment of Free Trade Area in 2017 before extending by three years the establishment of the Area until September 2020.
