ALGIERS- Sahrawi President Brahim Ghali on Thursday urged international human rights organizations to protect the helpless Sahrawi citizens from the violations committed by the Moroccan occupation forces,
denouncing the abuses inflicted on the Sahrawi people.
In a statement to the press ahead of an audience with the President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Sahrawi president denounced the violations inflicted by the Moroccan occupation forces on the defenseless Sahrawi people.
“We denounce these practices and call on international human rights organizations to access the besieged territory to protect the defenseless Sahrawi citizens”.
Ghali said he discussed with President Tebboune “the situation prevailing at the regional, African and international levels, particularly after Morocco’s recent attacks in violation of the ceasefire agreement signed between the Polisario Front and the Kingdom of Morocco under the auspices of the United Nations (UN) for the organization of a referendum on self-determination of the Sahrawi people.”.
“The Sahrawi people have been forced, following these attacks, to resume the armed struggle to snatch their right to freedom, independence and self-determination. They gave enough time to the international community, almost 30 years, to implement the settlement plan providing the organization of a referendum on self-determination,” said Ghali.
This goal could not be achieved because of the “obstacles Morocco continually puts to the UN effort for the decolonization of the last colony in Africa, the silence of the international community regarding Morocco’s obstacles and human rights violations against the defenseless Sahrawi citizens in the occupied territories,” he continued
Ghali referred to “the Sahrawi women mistreated daily in the streets because they dared to demand the application of international legality and allow the Sahrawi people to achieve self-determination and independence.”
The Sahrawi president said “the President of the Republic received him warmly two days before the celebration of the 45th anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).”
“I congratulated President Tebboune on his recovery and on Algeria’s return to the regional and international scenes. The meeting was fruitful and fraternal,” he concluded.
