ALGIERS-Algeria on Tuesday called the opening by the Government of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire of a diplomatic representation in the occupied Sahrawi city of Laayoune “flagrant transgression of international law” and “violation
of the commitments under the Constitutive Act of the African Union (AU),” announced the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a communiqué.
“Algeria took note of the opening by the Government of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire of a diplomatic representation in the Sahrawi town of Laayoune,” said the communiqué.
“Such an act on the part of an AU founding member is a violation of the commitments resulting from the organization’s Constitutive Act and a flagrant transgression of international law as well as the resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) on the decolonization of Western Sahara”, affirmed the ministry’s communiqué.
“Be that as it may, the decision to open diplomatic representation by some African countries, founding members of the AU, is just a new episode of a long series of manoeuvres and flight forward policy that cannot endure in the face of the force of law and international legality, but also the strong attachment of the Saharawi people to their natural and legitimate right to self-determination,” said the source.
