ALGIERS – A delegation from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) welcomed Algeria’s efforts to promote human rights, a statement from the People’s National Assembly (APN) said Wednesday.
The UN delegation, led by Habib Nasri, representative of the MENA Office, has been received by Nezar Cherif, Chair of the Lower House’s Committee on Legal Affairs, Administrative and Freedoms.
The Delegation hailed “the efforts made by Algeria in the promotion of human rights”, stressing that Algeria “is among the countries that comply with the international charters and most international recommendations.”
Welcoming “the path taken by Algeria to strengthen separation of powers,” the UN delegation president said that “the principles advocated by the OHCHR cannot be applied without independent justice.”
In this regard, he called for the organization of training sessions for Algerian parliamentarians on “human rights mechanisms and the functioning of OHCHR”.
On that occasion, the Chair of the Lower House Committee Cherif set out the significant political reforms that Algeria initiated under the leadership of President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, notably the Constitutional provisions of February 2016 in its section on the protection of human rights and the new prerogatives entrusted to the legislative power, explaining that the last constitutional amendment gave the opposition an active role in parliament.
