NEW YORK (United Nations)- Algeria leads the Arab efforts to hold an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the latest development in the occupied Palestinian territories,
the Algerian delegation said Wednesday in New York.
On Thursday, Algeria’s ambassador to the United Nations, Sofiane Mimouni, in his capacity as head of the Arab group in New York, accompanied by a delegation of this UN group, met with the chairman of the UN Security Council for the current month, Ambassador Zhang Jun, China’s Permanent Representative to the UN, to discuss the latest developments in the occupied Palestinian territories and to explore the possibility of activating the role of the Security Council in this respect.
Speaking on behalf of the Arab group in New York at the meeting, Ambassador Sofiane Mimouni called on the Security Council to fully assume its responsibility as guarantor of international peace and security and to ensure respect for international legality by condemning the measures taken by the Israeli colonial authorities against the inhabitants of the holy city of al-Quds and the use of excessive force by the occupying authorities.
He expressed Arab group’s regret at the Security Council’s failure to take a position on the recent escalation of violence and the systematic repression of the Palestinians, resulting in hundreds of victims, including children.
The Permanent Representative of Algeria called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council to make all actors face up to their responsibilities and to work for the protection of the innocent Palestinian people, through concrete actions on the ground.
In the absence of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who is on a trip to Moscow, a delegation of the Arab Group led by Ambassador Mimouni met on Thursday with Ms Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, the Chef de Cabinet to the UN chief, to raise awareness, among United Nations officials, of the seriousness of the situation on the ground and to urge them to act without delay to reach a truce as soon as possible and to commit themselves resolutely to a definitive settlement of the Palestinian issue.
