GUELMA (Algeria)- Kateb Yacine international novel prize was awarded Monday to Algerian Nassira Belloula and Moroccan Aicha El Basri at the end of the 7th international conference on the life and works of Kateb Yacine, organized in the province of Guelma (537-km east of Algiers).
Nassira Belloula, who lives in Canada, won the prize of the best novelist written in French for her work “Terre des femmes” (Land of Women).
The novel relates the saga of five female generations from the region of Aures who assert themselves in society through their strong determination and resistance to colonialism.
Aicha El Basri received the prise for her novel, written in Arabic, entitle “Hafidat Grita Jarbot.
El Basri’s novel is about a man who passed himself off as the son of a famous artist who, one day, was taken in picture with him during a visit to an orphanage.
The two prize winners did not attend the awarding ceremony for “administrative reasons,” according to the organizers.
The prizes for (Arab and French) poetry have not been awarded because the participating works did not match the criteria specified for winning the prize.
