ALGIERS- Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdelkader Messahel received Sunday, in Algiers, Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations, Assistant Administrator of UN Development Programme (UNDP)
and Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau For Arab States Mourad Wahba, said a ministerial communiqué.
Wahba is currently on a visit to Algeria as part of his participation to the international conference co-organized by the Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities and National Planning in partnership with UNDP under the theme “Promoting women’s involvement in politics, essential support to political reform and sustainable development,” which is held in Algiers on 17-18 March.
On the occasion of this meeting, held at the ministry’s headquarters, the two sides welcomed the quality of relations between Algeria and UNDP and reaffirmed their willingness to further strengthen cooperation in different fields.
A particular emphasis was put on the progress made by Algeria in terms of promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment thanks to the modernization of the national legislation which ensures a greater representativeness of women in the elected assemblies, said the source.
The important presence of women in different sectors (education, higher education, health, magistracy, ICTs), exceeding 50%, was also underlined in this meeting.
The talks also focused on the issue of illegal migration, fight against terrorism, Algerian experience in de-radicalization and national reconciliation that UNDP hopes to share with other countries as part of its regional cooperation programmes, concluded the source.
