BRAZZAVILLE- Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdelkader Messahel on Saturday has reiterated Algeria’s position on the crisis in Libya in favour of a political solution based on inclusive dialogue and national reconciliation
and rejecting any foreign interference.
In his address at the 4th meeting of the African Union High-Level Committee on Libya, taking place in Brazzaville, Congo, Messahel, who is representing President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, welcomed the presence of Libyan parties as well as the members of the Libyan dialogue committee in the meeting.
“The military option cannot be accepted because it would lead to division and chaos in Libya, and would profit to the evil forces: criminal and terrorist groups,” said Messahel.
In this regard, he hailed “the victories achieved by Libyans in their fight against terrorism in Sirte, Benghazi and many other Libyan towns.”
The Foreign minister underlined that the Libyan political accord remains the only framework for the resolution of the crisis, adding that only Libyans can amend it to bridge current differences.
Messahel emphasized the need to unify national institutions, especially the establishment of a national army and security services as well as strong and legitimate institutions, in order to support efforts for the restoration of stability and security in Libya, necessary to build a strong and credible state and meet Libyan people’s aspirations.
He said that it is incumbent upon the African Union, as a continental organization, through its High-level committee, chaired by Congo’s President Denis Sassou N’Guessou, to assist and support Libyans in the resolution of the crisis.
The foreign minister added that Algeria remains confident that Libyans have the capacity to overcome their differences and implement the political agreement they signed on 17 December 2015.
Messahel recalled Algeria’s efforts since the beginning of the crisis with a view to bridging positions between Libyan parties and promoting the emergence of a consensual political solution, which is possible only through an inclusive dialogue and reconciliation.
“It is within this spirit that I paid visits, in April 2016 and April and May 2017, to different eastern, western and southern localities and regions in Libya, especially El Beida, Zintan, Benghazi, Misrata, Ghat, Ghadames and Tripoli,” said the Foreign minister.
He also reiterated Algeria’s willingness to continue supporting the ongoing UN-sponsored political process.
