ALGIERS – Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdelkader Messahel met in Abu Dhabi with several counterparts and senior officials of International Organizations.
They exchanged views and held consultations on many issues, notably the regional security, said Sunday a communiqué of the ministry.
The talks took place on the sidelines of Sir Bani Yas Forum organized by the United Arab Emirates from 3 to 5 November.
Thus, the FM met with his Emirati counterpart Sheikh Abdallah al Nahyan, with whom he discussed the state of bilateral cooperation, the means to reinforce them, as well as many regional and international issues.
In this regard, Messahel “expressed his interest in such meetings likely to contribute to a better understanding of the major issues facing the international community and greater synergy on the ways and means of their settlement,” added the same source.
With Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Choukri, Messahel evoked “the state of cooperation between the two countries as well as the next bilateral meetings.”
The two ministers also reviewed “the latest developments in the situation in Libya, ahead of the holding in Cairo on 15 November of the Algeria-Egypt-Tunisia Tripartite meeting at ministerial level.”
In this regard, Messahel reiterated “Algeria’s commitment to the political solution in Libya through dialogue and national reconciliation, as part of the UN-sponsored process.”
The minister also met with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi, with whom he discussed “the state of bilateral relations and the preparations for the next meeting of the Joint Cooperation Commission between the two countries.”
Messahel has also talks with his Rwandan counterpart Louise Mushikiwabo. The two sides discussed “the bilateral relations as well as the prospects for their reinforcement in various fields.”
The two ministers also discussed “the next meetings at the African Union, as well as the Ministerial Meeting of the US and the African countries on regional security and partnership in the economic and trade, planned in Washington on November 17th.”
The Algerian minister also had discussions with his Tanzanian counterpart Augustin Mahiga, during which the two sides discussed “a number of issues of common interest,” the statement added, announcing that Mahiga would pay a visit to Algeria before the end of November.”
Messahel also held talks with the Arab League Secretary General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, on “the situation in the region and the challenges facing the Arab countries.”
In addition, he discussed with UN Special Representative for Libya, Ghassane Salame “the situation in Libya, in the light of the latest developments in this country and the UN efforts as part of the ongoing political process.”
On this occasion, Messahel renewed to the UN official “the commitment of Algeria to Libya’s stability and its commitment to support the political process in this country.”
Algeria “maintains permanent contact with all Libyan parties in order to contribute to efforts to resolve the crisis in Libya,” he said.
Finally, the minister examined the situation in Yemen with UN Special Representative Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmed, emphasizing in this regard “the importance of a political approach that promotes dialogue and reconciliation between the Yemeni parties so to find a quick solution to this crisis.”
