ALGIERS- Minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League Abdelkader Messahel is to represent the president of the Republic at the summit of African Union Committee of Ten Heads of State and Government on United Nations Security Council reform, to be held on Friday in Windhoek, Namibia, the ministry of Foreign Affairs said Thursday in a statement.
UN Security Council reform is on the agenda of the General Assembly meeting at the request of a number of nations, including African countries.
The request is aimed at getting the United Nations Organization, created in 1945, “to better reflect the evolution of international relations, especially by giving to Africa the place it deserves among the Nations,” added the source.
Algeria, according to the statement, works for “the success of Africa’s joint position on UN Security Council reform, resulting from Ezulwini consensus, in March 2005.”
Ezulwini consensus claims two permanent member seats for Africa at the UN Security Council.
In this regard, the Committee of the Ten Heads of State will undertake, in Windhoek, an analysis of the intergovernmental negotiation process over the issue and will examine ways and means to strengthen Africa’s position.
